Drawnomic

I developed a one-of-a-kind reactive drawing machine, Drawnomic, which builds upon the principles of hanging-pen plotters and Polargraph technology. This innovative device bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds, exploring how virtual actions can influence and create tangible change in real-time.

Drawnomic operates in two distinct modes:

  • Passive Mode: In this mode, the machine faithfully recreates existing images with precision.
  • Reactive Mode: Here, Drawnomic comes alive, accepting instructions and inputs, directly or indirectly, from anywhere in the world via RSS feeds and other live data streams. These inputs are processed through our custom software, which interprets the data and guides the machine to use a pen (a symbol of human creativity) to render unique, data-driven designs.

The reactive mode transforms the design process into a global collaboration. By utilising live data streams, such as news feeds from the Internet, Drawnomic generates patterns that reflect real-world events. The dynamic and unpredictable nature of these inputs ensures that each drawing is entirely unique, serving as a visual snapshot of a specific moment in time.

For instance, live news is analysed, filtered, and converted into visual patterns, which are then drawn by the machine. The result? A completely bespoke piece of art that is both a creative and a historical artefact.

Drawnomic has been proudly exhibited at Nottingham Contemporary and Nottingham Playhouse, showcasing its ability to blend art, technology and data into a harmonious and thought-provoking experience.
